Traditional hat blocks are valuable working tools, but collecting every needed size and profile can be expensive. Blocksmith Works offers another practical starting point: generate the crown tooling you need and print it on equipment you already have access to.
The workshop uses millinery choices instead of generic CAD controls. Start with the intended finished hat size, choose the head oval, set the open-crown height and profile, and create a full-size STL. The tool does not replace blocking, steaming, creasing, trimming, sewing, or finishing skill. It makes the underlying form more accessible.

What the workshop lets you choose
A useful crown block is more than a circumference wrapped around a cylinder. Blocksmith Works keeps the essential choices visible: intended finished size, head oval, overall crown height, and one of four crown profiles. The generator protects the geometry that turns those selections into a smooth, printable working surface.
Size and head shape are separate decisions. Two people can share the same head circumference while needing different front-to-back and side-to-side proportions. Designed to become a physical workshop tool
The exported crown is intended to be sliced at 100% scale. Blocksmith Works also generates the matching BS-1.0 stand and provides a recommended dimensional fit check so you can verify that a printer-and-filament combination produces the intended fit before committing to a large block.
Real prints still matter. Inspect the mesh in the slicer, confirm its dimensions, and examine the finished surface by sight and touch. A smooth preview cannot reveal every raised seam, layer shift, or material problem that damp felt may record.
From measurements to a printed crown block
- Choose the intended finished hat size or enter a dependable circumference.
- Select round, standard oval, or long oval for the head shape you are fitting.
- Set the crown height and profile as the open form you will shape later at the bench.
- Generate the STL and confirm the displayed dimensions in the slicer at 100% scale.
- Choose material and print settings appropriate to the expected heat, steam, tension, and handling.
- Inspect the finished block and stand before valuable felt touches the surface.

Free tooling without diminishing the craft
A printed block does not make the hat. It provides a repeatable form so the maker can concentrate on felt behavior, proportion, crease, brim, trim, and finish. Blocksmith Works remains free so beginners can learn and experienced makers can create a practical starting form without a paywall between them and the bench.
The current public workshop focuses on crown blocks, the matching stand, and the recommended fit check. Brim blocks, flanges, and additional millinery tools are released only after their geometry and physical behavior have earned a place in the workshop.
