What is a hat block?
A hat block is a form used to shape a hat. A crown block establishes the crown’s size, oval, height, and starting profile; separate brim tooling supports the brim. The maker’s blocking and finishing work turns those forms into a finished hat.

“Hat block” is often used for the crown form a maker works over. When choosing tooling, distinguish the crown from the brim: they solve different shaping problems, and one form does not do every part of the job.

Choose the hat block size and head oval separately
Begin with the intended finished hat size or a dependable circumference. Round, standard oval, and long oval describe different front-to-back and side-to-side proportions. Two people can share a circumference and still need different starting shapes.
