A model plus settings for a supported printer/slicer combination. Open it as a project in the intended slicer. It still needs slicing.
Start here · beginner print setup
From download to a checked slice.
Set up your printer once in this browser, choose the right file, and check the slice before committing filament. Blocksmith Works prepares supported settings; you stay in control of the printer.
1. Match the printer on your bench
- Open an Printer Setup page and choose Printer Setup.
- Select the exact printer, installed nozzle diameter, slicer and actual filament. A saved choice does not detect a changed nozzle or loaded spool.
- Choose Save Printer on This Device. The summary shows the saved choices and whether configured 3MF is available. Save again after changing a choice.
- Choose your tool, finished size, oval and height. Read the package instructions before downloading.
Where supported, printer setup lets us include the intended walls, infill, shell layers and reinforcement in your 3MF, reducing manual slicer setup. It is remembered in this browser on this device; a different browser/device, private browsing or cleared site data may require setup again. It does not change the printer or install profiles into your slicer.
Printer not listed? Use the custom/manual setup option where offered, enter the actual usable build volume, and use STL. Send the exact printer model, nozzle, material and slicer/version through Feedback in the workshop to request support.
| Slicer | Setup | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Bambu Studio | Supported Bambu printer, nozzle and material combinations | Configured crown, finishing plug, riser and stand projects. Confirm the saved setup and any reinforcement ranges after opening. |
| OrcaSlicer | Anycubic Kobra S1 Max · 0.4 or 0.6 mm · Anycubic PLA or PETG reference profiles | TESTING configured crown, plug, riser and stand projects. Actual installed-slicer and physical checks remain pending. |
| Anycubic Slicer Next | Same Kobra S1 Max combinations | TESTING adaptation of the Orca reference profiles, not a native S1 Max preset. Check the machine, material and every reinforcement range. |
| PrusaSlicer, Cura, SimplyPrint or other combinations | STL with manual settings | Choose the correct manufacturer printer and filament profiles, then apply the settings supplied for your exact tool. Configured Blocksmith projects are not available for every combination. |
2. Know what you downloaded
Geometry without a prepared print process. Select your printer/material profiles and enter the tool’s settings yourself.
Brim, Conformer and Toppers workshop 3MF files are model-only. Static Tool Crib and Early Preview files use their own package instructions and do not inherit your website Printer Setup. A .3mf extension alone does not promise compatible settings.
Extract downloaded ZIPs first. Keep the tool, settings text, instructions, project JSON and matching coupons together. Project JSON restores a Blocksmith design; it is not a slicer file. Settings text is a reference to read, not an automatically imported preset. Blocksmith downloads are not pre-sliced printer code.
Reference settings for current online crown-family tools
These are trial starting settings from the current online exporters, not a strength or steam qualification. The settings for your exact downloaded tool take precedence. This table does not apply to brim, Conformer, Toppers or static Early Preview packages. Reinforcement ranges below apply when reinforcement is enabled.
| Setting | 0.4 mm nozzle | 0.6 mm nozzle |
|---|---|---|
| Layer height | 0.20 mm | 0.30 mm |
| Crown / finishing plug / riser body | 8 walls · 40% gyroid | 6 walls · 40% gyroid |
| Top and bottom shell layers | 8 top · 8 bottom | 6 top · 6 bottom |
| Crown / plug bottom 19.05 mm (¾ inch) | 12 walls · 80% gyroid | 8 walls · 80% gyroid |
| Riser bottom and top 6.35 mm (¼ inch each) | 12 walls · 80% gyroid | 8 walls · 80% gyroid |
| Stand body | 6 walls · 20% gyroid | 6 walls · 20% gyroid |
| Stand stud through 3 mm below upper mating surface | 10 walls · 85% gyroid | 8 walls · 85% gyroid |
These profiles use random seams, fuzzy skin off and ironing off. Confirm supports for the exact tool and follow the filament maker’s temperature, drying and speed guidance. Short plugs limit the reinforced range to their actual height. All range heights are measured from the print bed; the stand range depends on your chosen stand height.
3. Open, check and save your slicer project
Bambu Studio
- Save any unrelated work, then use File → Open Project to open the configured 3MF. Choose the project option if asked; geometry-only import can discard the supplied process.
- Check the printer, nozzle, plate type and filament against your actual setup. Check global settings and object/height-range overrides; global infill alone does not show the reinforcement.
- Slice, inspect the full layer preview, then use Save Project as to save a separate file with a name such as Blocksmith Works — Crown — P1S — 0.6 mm. Reopen it and confirm the settings and ranges.
OrcaSlicer / Anycubic Slicer Next
The Kobra S1 Max projects remain TESTING. Menu names vary by version.
- Save your current work. Use File → Open Project for the target-slicer configured 3MF.
- Confirm S1 Max, nozzle, material and usable plate, then inspect the object and height-range settings. If the slicer loads geometry only, reports unknown settings or substitutes a different printer, treat it as manual setup.
- Slice and check every layer, then save a separate Blocksmith Works project. Reopen and check it before printing.
Orca projects are documented to retain objects and settings; incompatible 3MF data can be ignored. Official Orca import/export guide.
PrusaSlicer / Cura / manual STL setup
- Start a new project with the correct manufacturer printer/nozzle/material profiles and import the STL in millimeters at 100% scale.
- Use the settings text included with your exact tool. Apply local reinforcement with object or height-range modifiers where needed. If the selected slicer cannot reproduce the ranges, use a supported path rather than assuming global infill is equivalent.
- Slice, inspect and save a separate project. PrusaSlicer uses File → Save Project as; use your Cura version’s project-save command for the complete project.
Official Prusa project-saving guide. Saving a manually configured project does not make it a Blocksmith-generated configured export.
iPad or browser slicing with SimplyPrint
SimplyPrint is an optional external service with its own account, limits and terms. Blocksmith Works remains free and does not require it. Its documentation describes best-effort external 3MF import; full Blocksmith reinforcement transfer and the iPad workflow are not yet verified.
- Download and extract the package in your device’s file manager. In SimplyPrint, select the actual slicing engine, printer/nozzle, bed, filament and process.
- Import the STL for manual setup, or inspect every imported setting if using a configured 3MF. In Objects, check object overrides and height ranges. Where available, an object’s context menu offers Add height range modifier.
- Apply the exact tool’s settings, slice, and review all layers. If required range controls are unavailable for your engine/account, use the intended desktop slicer.
- Save the checked cloud project as SPS for later use in SimplyPrint. A reusable cloud process profile alone does not replace the full project.
To import your own saved desktop presets, go to Settings → Slicing → Slicer profiles, choose the engine, select Import profile, validate, review and import under a separate name. Account profile limits may apply; this is not required for using Blocksmith. Profile instructions · 3MF and SPS limits · Object and range settings.
Choose filament for the job
PET-CF is our recommended starting material for working blocks when the printer and filament manufacturer support it. Use compatible abrasive-resistant hardware and the manufacturer’s drying, temperature and handling guidance. PETG, PETG-CF, PA-CF, ABS and ASA require their own use-specific checks; a selectable material profile is not a steam or strength approval. PLA is for dry, room-temperature displays only, not working blocks exposed to heat or steam. Read the material guide.
4. Check the slice before the printer starts
- Identity: correct tool, size, oval, revision and assembly interface. Never substitute a different coupon or mix quadrants.
- Dimensions: millimeters, 100% scale, expected outside dimensions and every part inside the usable build volume in its intended orientation.
- Setup: actual printer, installed nozzle, loaded material and bed type. Follow the material manufacturer’s temperatures and drying instructions.
- Structure: walls, infill pattern/percentage, top/bottom shells and every reinforcement range agree with the supplied settings. Review the sliced layers across each range boundary.
- Surface and support: intended flat base, open sockets, random seam where specified, fuzzy skin off on fitting/working surfaces, and support requirements from this exact package.
- Time and material: review the slicer estimate before committing to the full tool.
5. Keep the result useful
After printing, measure and inspect the cooled tool, sockets and felt-contact surface. Record printer, material, slicer/version, scale, hardware, dimensions, coupon result and actual print or hat-fit outcome. Use the workshop’s private print-result form to share a result. A correct-looking model or successful slice does not establish physical fit, heat resistance or strength.
If something does not match
Pause before printing. Reopen the intended project or use the matching STL and settings. Report the workshop, displayed error, printer, nozzle, filament, slicer/version and whether settings or ranges disappeared. Keep personal lettering and head traces out of screenshots unless you intend to share them.
